Yesterday’s stage 8 of the South American Dakar held much bad luck for the previous stage winner Nasser Al-Attiyah, who suffered problems with his Hummer throughout the longest special of the event. Spaniard Joan “Nani” Roma and Frenchman Michel Périn put on a superb display of driving in the final sections to bring their Mini to the Antofagasta bivouac in first place.
After the cancellation of Friday’s stage 6 due to exceptionally poor conditions, the Dakar field continued to finish the first week of the rally raid with a loop from and to the bivouac in Copiapo for stage 7. Triumphant were the Hummers of Nasser Al-Attiyah and Robby Gordon.
Colin Matthews and Alan Smith ended their national championship off road racing season on a high note with an excellent second place in their Century Property Developments BAT special in the RFS Magalies 400. The result equalled their best performance of the season when they finished runners-up in the Sun City 400 in July.
The next challenge for the Century Property Developments Racing team is the Limpopo 400, round six of the Absa Off Road Car Championship, which takes place in the Polokwane area on Friday and Saturday (September 12 and 13).
Century Property Developments Racing raised a few eyebrows at the second round of the Absa Off Road Championship in the Eastern Cape in April when their brand new CR1, a four wheel drive transverse-engined contender in the Special Vehicle category, led its first race after starting 10th in class following a ‘cautious’ prologue.
Former South African champion Terence Marsh and Pieter Groenewald, in the Regent Racing BAT, upstaged some more fancied teams to win the Special Vehicle category in a dramatic Nissan Dealer 400 in Darling.
Century Property Developments Racing caused a stir at the opening round of the Absa Off Road Championship in Darling at the weekend when they arrived at the event headquarters in Darling with their brand new CR1, a four wheel drive transverse-engined contender in the Special vehicle category.
Century Property Developments Racing, the motor sport division of Midrand-based Century Property Developments, has put the disappointment of being denied a debut appearance in the 2008 Dakar Rally behind them and will contest the 2008 Absa Off Road Championship with a brand new South African-built four wheel drive car in the Special Vehicle category, starting with the Nissan Dealer 400 in the Western Cape this weekend (February 29 and March 1).
Former South African champions Duncan Vos and Ralph Pitchford are on track to win the Production Vehicle category in this year’s Absa Off Road Championship.
Duncan Vos and Ralph Pitchford (Nissan Navara) made it three in a row when they won the Amathole 400, round five of the Absa SA Off Road Championship, which ended at the Fish River Sun in the Eastern Cape on Saturday afternoon.
