The national racing circus’s first and only visit to the Free State this year provided breathed new life in the various formulae thanks to the faces that secured top finishes at Phakisa at the weekend.
The Team Castrol Toyota crews of Duncan Vos and Rob Howie, and Anthony Taylor and Chris Birking broke a 13 year curse of Toyota not being able to win at its home event – the Toyota Kalahari Botswana 1000 Desert Race – on the weekend as they cruised to a 1-2 finish and cemented their stranglehold on the championship.
There were many good performers at Zwartkops raceway in Pretoria this weekend, but none so stellar as Sasol Subaru driver Hennie Groenewald, who commanded class A of the Bridgstone Production Car Championship with a clean sweep of the three heats – significantly boosting his championship hopes.
