Plug-in hybrids explained
The Fisker Karma is in the process of being launched in North America and Europe. Different form the Leaf, the Karma – along with EVs from Tesla and the Chevrolet Volt – are plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles and makes use of batteries and an electric motor to power to vehicle, but also has a conventional engine that acts as a backup powertrain. This is referred to as range extenders in the industry.
