Here are a few ”Green” cars we love and think you should too!

By: CAR magazine

Since hybrid cars are now quite widely available in South Africa, it is a bit strange that we don’t see a variety of them on our roads. This might be because studies suggest that people don’t really know a lot about hybrid and electric vehicles or that the step from a fuel-powered car to a hybrid or electric car might be a bit too big for the average South African.

Even though it seems like South Africans are sticking to petrol and diesel (for now), ”green” vehicles are slowly but surely becoming a trend. Here are some of our favourite ”green” cars available in South Africa:

1. Honda Jazz Hybrid

Price: From R262 400

This hybrid releases emissions of 105g/km and boasts a fuel consumption of 4,4 litres per 100km.

2. Honda CR-Z Hybrid

Price: R340 000

The fuel consumption of this model comes up at 5,2 litres/100 km, while COemissions are pegged at an equally laudable 124 g/km

3. Toyota Yaris Hybrid

Price: From  R276 900

The COemissions of this hybrid come out at a low 82g/km. The fuel consumption comes out at 3,6 litre.

For some people the additional cost of a hybrid vehicle can be a deterrent, however it has been described that "owning one is like converting religions and realising you just spent your life with the wrong group".

There are quite a few advantages of owning a hybrid (other than the obvious "eco-friendliness" of the car) -“ discounts on insurance, lower fuel costs, lower long-term costs and knowing you have invested in trying to "save the earth" against the wrath of global warming are just a few of them. Being "green" will always be a trend.

Yet, if you feel hybrid cars aren’t for you, have a look at the fouth option:

4. Volkswagen’s BlueMotion range

Price: From R201 100

This car shows emissions of 89g/km and fuel consumption of 3,4 litres per 100km.

The BlueMotion concept – Volkswagen’s trade name for its green vehicles -“ has been around since 2006. They have normal combustion engines, yet they achieve better fuel consumption and lower emissions than some hybrids.

If you don’t find a liking in any of these choices, have a look at some more ”green” cars here.
