Most stolen cars in South Africa: is your car a target?

By: CAR magazine

South Africa has one of the highest stolen car statistics in the world and according to a report in 2015 by Carinfo.co.za, over 55 000 cars are stolen each year.

The report also stated that stolen cars are costing South Africa’s economy as well as making personal insurance premiums for motorists much higher.

There seems to be little to no information collected by police or official government bodies to indicate exactly which types of cars are stolen over a period of time.

It seems that most of the information supplied has to do with the amount of cars stolen, rather than the brand or model of the vehicles.

The high rate of stolen cars is also used as an indication of the high rate of hijackings that occur in SA.

  • The Toyota Hiace;
  • The Nissan 1400;
  • The Toyota Hilux;
  • The Toyota Venture;
  • The Toyota Corolla.

In 2015 various reports were released stating a spike in theft of Toyota Hilux and Fortuners.
