Tips for cleaning your vehicle’s interior

By: CAR magazine

Personal hygiene has never been more important, especially during a worldwide pandemic. However, the hard work you put into making sure your hands are always as clean as possible can quickly be made redundant if your vehicle’s interior is covered with dirt and bacteria.

To ensure both you and your vehicle are as clean as possible, below is a guide on how you can use common household disinfectants to clean your car.

Before you start scrubbing away, ensure that you have the following equipment.

  • A pair of disposable gloves,
  • A protective face covering,
  • A disposable apron. Alternatively, you could also use a regular apron, just make sure to wash it once you’re done
  • A cleaning cloth
  • A vacuum and bleach-free household disinfectants to ensure you don’t damage your car’s interior.

Once you have gathered all the necessary tools, it’s time to start cleaning. A good idea would be to let the vehicle air-out for a few minutes. While your car’s interior is getting some fresh air, you could use that time to remove larger pieces of rubbish or items you no longer need.

Once your car has received enough fresh air, it’s time to start cleaning. Start by removing the vehicle’s mats in order to vacuum the dirt trapped under them. Scrub the mats with soap and hot water or a foaming carpet cleaner and allow them to air dry completely.

Next, get your vacuum out to remove the larger pieces of dirt and grime. Don’t forget to vacuum your seats and the trunk as well.

For the next step, wet your cleaning cloth slightly, apply your household disinfectant, and start wiping down all the surfaces of the car. These surfaces include:

  • The odometer screen and dashboard,
  • Gearstick,
  • Indicators switches,
  •  Front and back of the steering wheel,
  • Controls on the steering wheel.

Also, pay close attention to areas like the passenger and central ventilation units, heating controls, radio controls and screen, glove-box, and cupholders. Don’t forget about the windows. Spray a window cleaner solution on windows and wipe clean with a paper towel or microfiber cloth.

After all the interior surfaces have received a thorough wipe down and both your car and its mats have been vacuumed, put the floor mats back in their correct position and close the doors and windows to ensure no dirt or dust is able to enter the vehicle.
