We expected the biggest challenge to the 3 Series’s supremacy in this category would come from the all-new Lexus IS range that was recently introduced. In our review of the latter’s IS350 model, we picked it ahead of the former’s more expensive 335i Sports Steptronic in the test’s match-up box. However, as accomplished as the IS range is by virtue of progressive styling, excellent specification and superb build quality, there is also just three models and one engine/transmission option. By contrast, our experience with a BMW ActiveHybrid3, on which we conducted a 20 000 km evaluation, as well as the road test of the 316i entry-level model (on standard suspension and sensibly sized wheels) suggest the 3 Series is not only a substantial product, but that it does not need a plethora of luxury adornments to be class-leading, either. And, with the further addition of the 330d flagship turbodiesel model, the Bavarian executive sedan offers a comprehensive range with very few drawbacks. The new Mercedes-Benz C-Class might be waiting in the wings, but it will need to overcome a superbly balanced product to wrest this title.
Runners Up:
Audi A4
The value proposition of the A4 range was recently underlined by the arrival of its A3 Sedan. With class-leading levels of perceived build quality, engine technology and a spacious cabin, the
A4 remains Audi’s finest sedan offering.
Lexus IS
The IS has gone from the humdrum to the sublime in its latest guise. Not only is the newcomer a head-turner, luxurious and sporty at its core, but the IS350 offers great value at the middle to high end of the segment. More, please?
