As CES 2022 gets off to a start, we ready ourselves for a flurry of exciting automotive tech innovations over the coming few days, the first of which is Cadillac’s InnerSpace Concept.
While General Motors’ departure from South Africa may have left some wondering what has happened to the motoring giant, scenes from CES show a very exciting lineup of new products set to grace the American motoring landscape in years to come. Big news is the Chevrolet Silverado EV, the latest in a line of electric-powered US-sized bakkies, but the showstopper on the GM stand was by far and away the striking Cadillac InnerSpace.
Following Cadillac’s theme of ‘space’ named vehicles – the aptly named PersonalSpace and SocialSpace were unveiled at least year’s CES – InnerSpace is geared towards being a luxurious and calming, erm, space, big enough for two. Full autonomy leaves the relaxed occupants to take in their surroundings through either the broad windows or the rather large digital screens, while Artificial Intelligence manages the rest for what Cadillac describe as a “personalised experience.”
Control inputs are made via a large panoramic display which features everything from entertainment to augmented reality and is also integral to the “wellness recover themes” on offer which one can assume will sooth after a stressful day or something to that affect.
Visually, InnerSpace is very Cadillac, meaning it has a long rakish stance and sits rather low to the ground. Battery modules are spread throughout the vehicle as opposed to sitting together in one large pack, allowing for InnerSpace’s interior to be airier and more open. It also allows for the vehicle’s floor to sit low to the ground, improving aerodynamic efficiency and providing a more ”sporty” feel.
Bryan Nesbitt, GM executive director, Global Advanced Design and Global Architecture Studio said: “Electrification and autonomous driving will fundamentally change the role of vehicles and the experiences customers have with them,”
“We’re exploring where that will go with these innovative concepts, envisioning mobility as an ally of wellness, giving customers the ultimate luxury, more personal time rather than taking it.”
While the InnerSpace Concept is just that, a concept, it is likely that many of its features are destined to land up in a GM product at some point down the line, even if the car doesn’t enter production in its current form. Fingers crossed that it looks even half as good as what they have showcased.
