In the June 2011 issue of CAR magazine, we research the electric-vehicle market in California and its application in South Africa.
The first electric vehicle (EV) to reach local shores will most likely be the Nissan Leaf, which could be on sale in South Africa before the year is out. The Leaf is a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) and, as such, makes use of batteries and an electric motor for power. The batteries need about 10 hours to charge and it is as simple as plugging the car in to a power outlet or socket as you would a kitchen appliance.
This video shows how easy it is, but be sure to read our feature article to see that things are not as rosy as they appear. Also check out the June issue of the magazine for a short driving impression and a look at what needs to happen for this car to become a common sight on our roads.
