We all love a high-production value motorsport film – Ford v Ferrari, Driven and Rush come to mind. The latter having Niki Lauda played by Daniel Bruhl who has also taken on a role in the forthcoming “Race For Glory”, swapping the tarmac of Formula 1 circuits for the gravel and snow of Group B during the World Rally Championship in 1983. Ushering in a new era of rallying motorsport, Audi revolutionized stage rally with the introduction of its Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
However, the lesser-known story of Lancia’s resistance against the AWD revolution during the 1983 World Rally Championship is about to be explored in this new movie set to debut in January. The film delves into the intense competition between Lancia and Audi during the early days of the Group B era. Audi, armed with its Quattro A1, was a dominant force, while Lancia, with the rear-wheel-drive 037, initially faced scepticism. Despite the odds, Lancia emerged victorious in the 1983 season, securing the manufacturer’s title. The movie, featuring Riccardo Scamarcio, Daniel Brühl, Katie Clarkson-Hill, and Volker Bruch as Lancia driver Walter Röhrl, promises an action-packed sports drama inspired by true events.
