The stage is set. Hot hatches versus crossover. And, most notably, petrol versus electric. The Volvo EX30 Twin Motor Performance’s first competitor comes in the shape of the seventh-generation Golf GTI TCR. But which one of these vehicles will cross the line the quickest?

With the immediate power and torque delivery of the Volvo’s electric motors (not to mention its outputs overshadowing that of the GTI TCR), it looks like the emissions-free crossover seems the clear winner. However, the results from the ⅛-mile race, staged by Gas Motorshow 2024 at Dezzi Raceway, are quite closer than you’d think, with the EX30 besting the GTI TCR by 0.3 seconds.

However, the 213 kW/370 N.m GTI TCR wasn’t the 315 kW/543 N.m Volvo’s only competitor. There were two more: the 228 kW/380 N.m Golf Mk7 R and previous-generation (294 kW/480 N.m) Audi RS3 – albeit sounding slightly less stock than when it rolled off of the showroom floor.
