How will the new Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI fare in a drag race against the Ford Focus ST? Well, the folks at CarWow have found out…

Interestingly, they brought along a Skoda Octavia vRS as well, with the VW Group sibling sharing the Golf 8 GTI’s powertrain.

As a reminder, the engine in both is the familiar EA888 turbocharged 2,0-litre, four-cylinder petrol unit, delivering 180 kW and 370 N.m to the front axle via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

And the Focus ST (which, you’ll no doubt realise, didn’t ever make it to local shores)? Well, the Blue Oval brand’s hot hatch employs a turbocharged 2,3-litre, four-cylinder petrol mill worth 206 kW and 420 N.m, delivered to the front wheels via a seven-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox.
