In the past 20 years or so, GT-R has become a household name amongst petrolheads. What obviously springs to mind nowadays is the current supercar slayer from Nissan and before it the R32, R33 and R34 – all of which have earned their stripes in international motorsport and as the choice of street racing’s elite.
But the GT-R story began way back in 1968 at the Tokyo Motor Show when Nissan, who had taken over the Prince brand, manufacturer of the original Skylines, launched the Gran Turismo Racer to dominate racing in Japan – which it did from its racing debut in 1969 till 1971. Powered by a 2,0-litre inline six-cylinder engine that produced 120 kW and just under 180 N.m of torque. Not much by today’s standards but enough for a reported thousand race wins back in the day…
