Nine months ago the Western Cape provincial government took the decision to use actual crash footage, captured by an array of surveillance fitted around the Cape, in an effort to highlight the inherent dangers of reckless and negligent driving in and around the city of Cape Town. This internet-based Safely Home campaign showed harrowing footage of real-life accidents on roads that most of us are very familiar with and, in some cases, travel along on a daily basis.
This first batch of crash videos is still one of the most popular blog posts to feature on CARmagblog.co.za and based on similar reactions on other sites and overwhelming support from the public the provincial government in the Western Cape has decided to release more footage in the hope that people, both drivers and pedestrians, will have a better understanding of what is actually happening on roads that for some are very close to home.
