We kicked off this series a few weeks ago with Sudhir Matai’s selection for the most improbable movie car stunts. This time around, Kelly Lodewyks chooses her stunt.
We all love a good car chase here at CAR. Most petrolheads are thrilled by the sight of driving cars dangerously fast through tight city streets, the wrong direction down motorways, or over Alpine passes, and even through underground train stations, mainly because we don’t (and shouldn’t) attempt such things in real life.
Over time we have learned a few things from the movies and even posted about it, but every now and then we spot something that has us shaking our heads in pure disbelief.
Ok, so my choice isn’t exactly a car scene, but at least it’s something with wheels. This scene from Mission Impossible two sees Ethan Hawke (Tom Cruise) and the bad guy chasing one another on motorbikes. I don’t even know where to start with this one. So many things here are improbable. They’re riding at such a high speed that most of the things done in this scene would have sent them off their bikes and into the truck, rusted car or off the cliff. Also, the last bit, where they drive straight at one another and jump off their bikes and knock chests and continue fighting is highly unlikely. A normal human being would be crushed. And I can’t help but wonder why neither of them just shot at the other while they were heading straight at them. It should have been a fairly easy shot. You can judge for yourself below.
