Love them or hate them, speed cameras are here to stay, both as a means of curbing speeding in high-accident areas and a handy source of income for local authorities.
The latest speed-curtailing gadget to extend the arm of the law even further is Simicon’s Cordon multi-target photo radar system. And it is a scary bit of technology. It can simultaneously identify and track 32 different vehicles across four lanes of traffic.
The system also creates two images per vehicle, one a wide-angle perspective and a close-up of the vehicle’s number plate.
The system is compact, so can be easily mounted to lamp posts, road signs and bridges. Apparently, it is also portable and can be mounted next to the road on a tripod.
The system is expected to be in use in North America in 2012 and should spread to other countries and continents soon after.
