We’ve heard what difference an Akrapovic exhuast system can make to a BMW M car courtesy of a so-equipped M6 Coupé that we tested last year. Last week, we took a BMW M3, which produces a characteristically resonant twin-turbo straight six warble, on CAR Performance Shootout 2015, the cover feature for CAR’s upcoming performance issue.
Irrespective of the fact that the M3’s soundtrack is electronically enhanced, we think it befits BMW’s latest performance sedan, but the folks at Akrapovic disagree. That’s why the firm has just released an all-titanium Evolution performance exhaust system for the M4/M3 that, when fitted, adds 5,4 kW at 4 400 r/min compared with the stock system (317 kW) and 17,4 N.m of torque (standard car: 550 N.m). It also weighs 3,3 kg less than the factory-fitted M4 exhaust, reports say.
The setup consists of a single-central muffler with valves and bigger-link pipe tubes with a middle muffler. The company says the system produces a completely different sound to the standard M3/M4, giving a deep and sporty sound – with no unwanted droning, and also a significant change to the sound with the valves in the open or closed positions.
But you don’t have to take the company’s word for it, just have a listen:
