Volvo Trucks says it has set two new world speed records using a modified truck dubbed “The Iron Knight”, which boasts mammoth outputs of 1 790 kW and 6 000 N.m.
Taking to a closed airfield in Sweden, the truck completed the 1km dash in just 21,290 seconds at an average speed of 169,093 km/h (from a standing start), breaking the previous record.
Over 500 metres from a standing start, the vehicle took 13,710 seconds at an average speed of 131,291 km/h, setting another record.
So, what was the Iron Knight’s overall top speed? A whopping 276 km/h, which is mighty impressive for something that weighs in at more than 4,5 tons.
The Swedish automaker says the record attempts were set up to demonstrate the potential performance of the truck’s clever dual-clutch transmission.
