Set to compete in the 2013 World rally championship, the Volkswagen Polo R WRC car not only looks the part but, judging by this video, has no intension of simply making up the numbers when it comes to next year’s timing sheets. It’s also handy having a driver of the calibre and experience of rally legend, Carlos Sainz available to give the new car a shakedown or two.
“I immensely enjoy being involved in the development and testing of the new Polo R WRC – and having the privilege of driving the first kilometres is naturally a great honour,” said Sainz. “The car is still in an early stage but already feels very good. For the whole team, whether engineers, mechanics or drivers, it’s very important to get to know the first real car as early as possible and to test and continue to develop it.”
Check out the sights and, importantly, sounds of the Polo R WRC being put through its paces by El Matador in Veldenz, Germany. In keeping with next season’s regulations the car is expected to feature 220 kW of power with 350 N.m of torque, while weighing a minimum of 1 200 kg.
