Sought after by many and universally adored, the E30 is often the centre of attention at many meets or shows. A particular V10-powered E30 built by Renner Projekts is a standout among standouts at this year’s SEMA show.
Gushehe. Dirty thirty. Itemba lamagomusha. God’s chariot. The E30 goes by many names, especially in South Africa but it is a global icon. Here in SA, the E30 — whether it be a 2-door 325is or a 4-door 318i — is royalty, so we were foaming at the mouth when Renner Projekts V10 E30 was on display. Before we fawn over the car, let’s talk about Renner Projekts. Their fleet is choker-blocked with modified BMWs, specifically classic BMWs -E28’s to E31s and even an E34 wagon-, which are hand built by them. Renner Projekts SEMA lineup included a 299 kW V8 E28, A 299 kW S62 E31, and the star-of-the-show, a 466 kW V10-powered E30.
This is the pinnacle of the idea of an OEM+ build. Internally codenamed the “ Projekt 3”, it’s lacquered in a gorgeous custom metallic silver blue, this stunning coupe is one of the most tasteful renditions of the E30 image to date. The sonorous V10 powering the E30 is sourced from a 2008 E60 M5 and has seen some extreme tweaks. Sitting 5mm from the firewall, this V10 has an aggressive tune on its VANOS system, which Renner projects says offers ample power across the rev band.
The car saw chassis reinforcements from front to back to ensure that the car can handle the copious amounts of power produced by the V10. The exterior, from the body kit to the windows and lights, are original BMW parts. The V10 E30 features 18-inch AL13’s C202 MONO R-Series with hand-painted blue accents. The Renner Projekts 3 features hand-painted pinstripes stretching from the front to the back of the car’s physique.
Easy on the eyes and a blessing to the ears, the Renner Projekts “Projekt 3” is a show car and driver’s car. The craftsmanship is on the bleeding edge of what is available to tuners of the modern age. As an E30 owner, this is a poster car. The only downside would be the asking price which sits at roughly R6 million… A small piece to pay for a bespoke collector’s item.
