Seemingly devoid of mechanical sympathy, Travis Pastrana’s death-defying Gymkhana 2022 run has to be one of the most extreme entries in the HOONIGAN Gymkhana series.
The HOONIGAN Gymkhana series is a mind-melting, face-churning, heartbeat-elevating, sweaty-palm-inducing series of videos that throw the petrolhead masses into a frenzy. Ken block’s name is synonymous with the high-octane driving cinematic series. From grinding on rails like a skateboard to jumping over a helicopter, Travis Pastrana broadens the Hoonigan Gymkhana team, and his second Gymkhana tour showcases some of the most stupefying driving skills and jaw-dropping stunts.
Pastrana’s weapon of choice is his bespoke 634 kW 1983 Subaru wagon. First appearing at the Goodwood Festival of Speed —and posting a 46,2-second run securing the 5th fastest time overall. That stint at Goodwood highlighted the Subaru’s grip racing potential. This showcases the car’s stunt driving capabilities.
The gnarly wagon is powered by a mean 2,3-litre — heavily modified —four-cylinder mated to a sequential transmission feeding power to all four wheels. All these race car standard innovations are housed in a tube-frame lightweight body. That same body is home to some spaceship-Esque driver-controlled active-aero components. Although over a decade old and kitted in some retro livery, the Gymkhana 2022 wagon features a bespoke interior ranging from goodies like a retro digital dash.
Although the Gymkhana series has a large fleet of cars, open stands above the rest. The Hoonicorn is the king of the Gymkhana arsenal. Piloted by Ken Block, the 1 043 kW Hoonicorn V2 was known for some of the most jaw-dropping stunts to ever grace the Gymkhana series, with its popular showcases being in exhibitions such as Gymkhana SEVEN and Climbkhana.
Has Travis Pastrana Gymkhana 2022 entry managed to trump Ken Block’s famed Climbkhana video? What’s next? How do you one-up this Hoonigan spectacle?
