It may seem like a mismatched pair for a drag race but the results between a Ferrari F355 and Kia EV6 are closer than you’d expect them to be; courtesy of the torque characteristics and lack of transmission that an electric vehicle boasts.
Even run of the mill, family hauling electric vehicles have these impressive capabilities which means that the preceding performance statistics aren’t as indicative of the results as would be expected. Of the two cars used in the latest Carwow YouTube video, the two motor Kia EV6 is quite competitively positioned. It is also effectively a four wheel drive car with one electric motor on each axle. This means it would be good for initial off the line acceleration with the traction. It comes with a combined peak output of 239 kW and an impressive 605 N.m. It is portly, dwarfing the blood red Ferrari on the other side of the runway and it weighs in at 2 090 kg.
The Maranello creation on the other hand only weighs 1 350 kg but is significantly down on torque offering only 360 N.m at maximum. The 3,5-litre naturally aspirated flat-plane crank also puts out 279 kW but it is all directed to the rear wheels with a gated manual transmission. This means it requires a bit more driver skill than plonking your foot down onto the loud pedal in the Kia.
Electric vehicles like the Kia offer impressive day to day performance and truly show how far mobility has come in three decades but despite this is there really anyone who wouldn’t choose to rather have a go in that Ferrari F355? We know our answer.
