The Luce is arguably the most controversial product ever revealed by Ferrari. However, this has not affected the Prancing Horse EV’s sales performance.

Ferrari has confirmed order books for its first-ever electric vehicle, the Luce, are completely filled up for 2027. This means if you are interested in one, but haven’t placed your order yet, you’ll have to wait until 2028. Group CEO Benedetto Vigna confirmed this during the company’s Q3 2026 earnings call. The Ferrari Luce is confirmed for the South African market, with pricing estimated to start at around R14 million.
When asked about the buyer’s profile of Luce customers, Vigna responded, “I think, Luce, we cannot, we do not want, we know, but we cannot provide you the split between the repeaters and the new client. What I can tell you is that we have a good mix. It is a good mix in terms of client, it is a good mix also in terms of geography. Let me say, there is not a specific pattern. We see the interest coming from people of different age and different countries.”
Why the Ferrari Luce has proved controversial
The backlash surrounding the Ferrari Luce stems from its radical departure from traditional brand values. Unveiled as Maranello’s first fully electric, five-seater vehicle, the model sparked immediate criticism from purists. Observers reacted strongly against its exterior styling, which was co-developed with former Apple designer Jony Ive. Many critics argued that the shape prioritised aerodynamic drag reduction over iconic supercar proportions. Some criticism draw unflattering visual comparisons to ordinary hatchbacks. Traditional enthusiasts expressed disappointment over the absence of an internal combustion engine. Consequently, concerns emerged that the electric architecture undermines classic Ferrari driving heritage.
Ferrari Luce powertrain, performance and range
The Ferrari Luce features a quad-motor, all-wheel-drive electric powertrain producing a total output of 772 kW and 990 N.m of torque. Power comes from a structural 122 kWh lithium-ion battery pack with 800 V architecture – the latter supporting DC fast charging of up to 350 kW. The WLTP driving range is rated at up to 530 km. Performance metrics include a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 2.5 seconds, 0–200 km/h in 6.8 seconds, and a top speed of 310 km/h.
