2021 has proven to be a less troublesome year for Toyota SA compared to 2020, as the brand closes its sales books of this year’s first six months at 56 460 units sold. Strong contenders in it stable remain the Hilux and HiAce but the Fortuner, Urban Cruiser, Corolla Quest and Starlet certainly have carried their weight for the brand.
As reported, Toyota was last month’s sales champion in South Africa with a unit figure of 9 630; a full 3 830 cars more than Volkswagen SA during the same period. For the first half of 2021, the brand’s strongest seller by a large margin was the Hilux with a figure of 19 818 units sold. For the month of June alone, the Hilux held 25 per cent of the brand’s market share with it amassing 3 320 units of the 9 630 total figure.
Quite some figure far behind this was Toyota SA’s second highest seller, the HiAce, with a result of 7 009 units. June alone saw the sale of 1 269 units. The brand’s passenger cars and crossovers didn’t fare all too badly either with the Fortuner achieving 4 798 units year-to-date. The Urban Cruiser, Corolla Quest and Starlet came in at 3 081, 4 240 and 4 702 units sold respectively. The Urban Cruiser’s result in this match-up is notable considering it was only introduced to our market as of March this year.
Although Toyota failed to clarify the year-to-date sales figures of the Land Cruiser Series Pick-Up and Prado, it has confirmed that for June, it sold 303 and 100 units of the two models respectively.
In March 2021, Toyota SA reported that it had seen a 24,2 per cent improvement in market share over the same period in 2020. No information has been provided regarding how the first half of 2021 sales compares to the previous year.
