Ahead of its official local launch, we were afforded the opportunity to sample the Chery Q for a first drive in Cape Town. Now, the Chinese automaker’s value-oriented electric vehicle (EV) has officially launched in South Africa.
2026 Chery Q powertrain, performance and electric range
Exclusively offered with a single powertrain option, Chery’s BYD Dolphin Surf and Geely E2 rival employs a single, rear-mounted electric motor producing 90 kW and 115 N.m of torque. Power is delivered to the road via the rear wheels. The electric motor is fed by a 42.7 kWh battery pack, which serves up a claimed operating range of up to 400 km on a full charge, the Wuhu brand says. The firm claims an average energy consumption of 12 kWh/100 km. According to the firm, the Q sprints from 0-100 km/h in 13.5 seconds on its way to a 135 km/h top speed.
2026 Chery Q dimensions
The Q stands 1 568 mm tall, 4 195 mm long, and 1 811 mm wide. Compared to the E2, the newcomer is 60 mm longer and 6 mm wider. The Q’s wheelbase is also longer than the E2’s, at 2 700 vs 2 650 mm, respectively.

2026 Chery Q features
Two trim grades are available: Comfort and Elite. The opening gambit to the lineup, Comfort spec ships with a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment, replete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, and 8.8-inch digital instrumentation as standard. An electrically operated tailgate is also present. Comfort trim rolls on 16-inch wheels.
Elite spec upgrades to a larger, 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen and gains electric adjustment for the driver’s seat. The Elite’s nose-located front luggage compartment is also electrically operated. The flagship model also benefits from a more comprehensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The top-tier derivative is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels.
2026 Chery Q price in South Africa
Priced from a hair below R350 000, the Q is one of the most affordable EVs in SA. Available in two trim grades, Comfort and Elite, the two-strong local lineup is priced at R349 900 for the former and R389 900 for the latter. The Q is sold with Chery’s five-year/100 000 km service plan, five-year/150 000 km vehicle warranty, and a battery warranty spanning 10 years or 200 000 km.
