Revealed in China earlier in 2026, the MG QS seven-seater SUV is en route to our market, with the automaker’s local arm announcing a South African launch date. We detail the upcoming new model.

Unveiled as the MGS9 in China earlier this year, MG’s local arm has confirmed the brand’s flagship SUV is en route to South Africa. The seven-seater SUV will be named QS in our market. We highlight the upcoming new model’s powertrain options, dimensions, and features…and when it will arrive on our shores.
MG QS powertrains, fuel consumption and range
Locally, the QS will be available with the choice of two powertrain options: 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol and plug-in hybrid (PHEV). The former, internal combustion-only (ICE) unit produces 153 kW and 355 N.m of torque. MG has confirmed the ICE will be available with both front- and all-wheel drivetrains, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The carmaker claims average fuel consumption figures of 8.4 and 8.8 L/100 km for front- and all-wheel-drive ICE models, respectively. Matching the former and latter figures translate to respective driving ranges of 774 and 739 km.
The PHEV setup comprises a (105 kW/230 N.m) 1.5-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol ICE and a single, front-mounted electric motor – the latter fed by a 24.7 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack. The new-energy arrangement produces combined power and torque outputs of 220 kW and 350 N.m. Power is exclusively delivered to the front wheels via a four-speed dedicated hybrid transmission (DHT). MG claims an electric-only operating range of 100 km and a combined range of 1 400 km.

MG QS dimensions, boot space and towing capacity
The QS measures 4 983 mm in length, 1 967 mm in width, and 1 778 mm in height. For reference, this makes it larger than the Volkswagen Tayron in all directions – the latter measuring 4 792 mm long, 1 853 mm wide, and 1 668 mm tall. The QS sports a 180 mm ground clearance. With all seats in place, the boot swallows a claimed 203 litres of goods. Folding down the rearmost seats frees up an additional 314 litres of packing space, to 514 litres. With the second-row seatbacks folded, the latter expands to 1 052 litres for utility purposes. MG quotes a braked towing capacity of up to 2 000 kg.

MG QS features, technology and safety
MG has largely remained tight-lipped about local specifications. However, from what we understand, the QS will feature such items as LED head- and taillamps – the latter incorporating a light bar spanning the electrically operated tailgate – daytime-running lights, and LED fog lamps. Stepping inside (via keyless entry), the interior plays host to 12.3-inch digital instrumentation and touchscreen infotainment, replete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto screen mirroring. A 12-speaker Bose sound system and a wireless smartphone charging pad is also present. Further included in the package are three-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, and a panoramic sunroof. Safety items include a 360-degree surround-view camera system and MG Pilot advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). The ADAS suite includes up to 16 functions.
MG QS South African launch date
MG’s local arm has announced the QS will launch in South Africa in January 2027. The local model lineup and pricing will be confirmed closer to the seven-seater SUV’s arrival in our market.
