The local new Subaru Outback lineup will comprise two derivatives, the latter including a rugged Wilderness grade, and two engine options.

Subaru South Africa has confirmed the local new Outback lineup ahead of its launch in the fourth quarter of 2026. The range will comprise two derivatives, Premium and Wilderness, with the former and latter employing 2.5- and 2.4-litre flat-four petrol engines, respectively.
The opening gambit to the two-strong lineup, the Premium’s 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder boxer powertrain produces 137 kW and 254 N.m of torque. The Wilderness variant adopts the Japanese automaker’s 2.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer unit, which produces a healthier 194 kW and 382 N.m. Both engines are coupled with Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT) and Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive as standard. Wilderness grade further gains an X-Mode all-wheel-drive management system.
Compared to the Premium model, the Wilderness also features more rugged exterior appointments, such as protective body cladding. The Wilderness is also fitted with all-terrain tyres.
Stepping inside, the cabin plays host to 12.3-inch digital instrumentation and 12.1-inch touchscreen infotainment, replete with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone screen mirroring. The Outback also features Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology, which uses a combination of LiDAR and stereoscopic camera feeds to oversee such safety systems as adaptive cruise control and pre-collision braking.
The new Outback measures 4 880 mm in length, 1 880 mm in width, and 1 715 mm in height – 20 mm longer, 25 mm wider, and 35 mm taller than the outgoing car. The wheelbase remains unchanged, at 2 745 mm. Depending on the derivative, the new Outback boasts a ground clearance of either 220 or 240 mm.
While Subaru South Africa has yet to reveal local pricing, the company has said both models will be sold with its upgraded maintenance plan, which spans five years or 105 000 km. A five-year/150 000 km vehicle warranty will also be included as standard.
