Toyota’s S-FR is a small entry-level concept sportscar set to make is official reveal at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show.
The S-FR places weight-saving front and centre thanks to its compact. At 3 990 mm long and 1 320 mm tall, the new S-FR is mere millimetres bigger than the MX-5. In terms of design, this new model draws a lot of inspiration from the 1965 Toyota Sports 800, with elements of the popular 86 thrown in for good measure.
No official stats have been released to accompany these images, but from what we can see the S-FR should be a direct competitor to the MX-5. It is also not certain whether this will replace the 86 or be offered as a smaller variant with a rumoured 1,5-litre 97 kW naturally aspirated petrol engine attached to a short-throw six-speed manual transmission.
The cabin of the S-FR will be configured to seat four people. A lot has been done to save weight, including the removal of a glove compartment and infotainment system and the availability of only one cupholder. The instrument gauge cluster will also be completely digital with a distinct racing element.
Updated
Toyota has now hinted that the S-FR will be equipped with a 1,2-litre turbocharged engine as seen in the facelifted Auris andwill produce 85 kW and 185 N.m of torque. This should aid the 1 000 kg body quite well and make for an interesting drive.
