Stellantis has confirmed that it will be establishing an automotive production facility in Coega and we have unearthed information confirming the model to be produced in the Eastern Cape from 2025 onwards.

If you haven’t already heard, Stellantis has announced a massive R3 billion investment into an automotive production plant in Coega, Eastern Cape. Their mandate is to have a facility ready to produce vehicles by 2025, with their first launch scheduled for 2026. Excitingly, the production line will comprise a 1-ton bakkie and we have done some digging to find out what could potentially be on offer in the next few years.

In the lineup of Stellantis are several 1-ton bakkies currently on offer. One of the models is available locally while the two others mentioned in this list aren’t and are sold exclusively in South America. First up is the Peugeot Landtrek, which is produced in China as a platform shared model with the Changan Kaicene F70. The model is produced by Changan Automobile and manufactured in Shenzhen by Shenzhen Baoneng Motor (previously Changan PSA) alongside several other global facilities.
Expected to launch by 2026, the automaker also has the opportunity to tool the facility to produce either the Fiat Toro or Ram Rampage which share many components with each other. While the Toro has been available for longer, it has earned a staunch reputation in the South American market constantly competing for top honours as best seller in its segment.
The fourth-largest automaker in the world has however opted to go the route of the Peugeot Landtrek. We have been reliably informed that the French-badged model will form part of Stellantis’ production plans at their Coega automotive plant. Considering the model has been on offer since 2020, we expect it may undergo a life cycle update before 2026 so the model as we know it may arrive slightly different to what we see here.

To recap, the model is available in the local market in two levels of trim as either an Allure model or 4Action 4×4. Both are powered by a 1,9-litre inline four-cylinder turbodiesel motor which churns out 110 kW and 350 N.m.
