The Toyota GR Corolla has been officially teased by the American unit of the Japanese manufacturer. What looks like a simple interior shot is actually a series of clues that hints to a hot hatch variant of the longstanding moniker.

The first Toyota GR Corolla clue to be noticed is the “G:16” found where the time should be on the digital instrument cluster. This is possibly a nod to Gazoo Racing’s G16E-GTS turbo-triple 1,6-litre unit which currently finds itself in the GR Yaris. This unit has been suggested for the Corolla already, but puts a rest to the 2,0-litre four-pot rumours.
If you look to the side mirror of this interior, you can even see a Toyota GR Corolla dressed in camouflage, rallying about through the dirt. On the satellite navigation screen, the street “GR Four” has been imprinted which suggests that this model will also adopt the brand’s all-wheel drive system with the Torsen limited slip differential.
A report out of Japan claimed the long-rumoured GR Corolla hot hatch will be more road-biased than the rally-bred GR Yaris.
It was said that the new GR Corolla will be available in both five-door hatchback and wagon form, offering more practicality than the smaller, three-door GR Yaris.
The biggest departure from the GR Yaris formula, however, is expected to come in the form of chassis tuning. It was also understood that the hot Corolla will be positioned as a “more casual” hatchback than the GR Yaris, with an emphasis on “on-road” (rather than rally-like) performance.
