Volkswagen has given us a closer look at its upcoming T7 Kombi and Caravelle replacements, with a new pair of teaser sketches as well as additional information on the new bus range.
Volkswagen’s people mover has been redesigned from the ground up and it’s not only the exterior styling that qualifies as more car-like, but the underpinnings too. Volkswagen has confirmed that its new Multivan, as the range is named in Germany, will be based around the modular MQB architecture that underpins most of today’s combustion-engined Volkswagens.
However, it’s only the passenger-focused variants that will migrate to the new platform. The current commercial models are expected to soldier on in their current (T6.1) form, set to be replaced in 2023 by a Ford-built vehicle that’s based on the next Transit. The deal works both ways, however, with Volkswagen’s latest Caddy set to underpin Ford’s next compact van.
The new MQB-based Volkswagen T7 will boast a brand new seating system that’s said to be the brand’s most flexible set-up ever. The people mover is also set to be offered with a new multi-function table for the rear cabin as well as a huge glass roof that lights up the entire cabin.
There’s no word on the engine line-up as yet, but plug-in hybrid variants are expected to form part of the mix. What Volkswagen has confirmed is that a shift-by-wire DSG dual-clutch gearbox will be fitted as standard to its new Multivans. Doing away with the traditional gear lever and handbrake will allow occupants to move easily between the front and back rows of the cabin.
Compared with its predecessor, the T7 is wider and has an “especially long” wheelbase and a lower profile. Although the design is unmistakably modern, lead designer Albert Kirzinger explained that the styling was strongly influenced by VW’s earlier bus models.
“Taking a major step forward, we have further enhanced the unmistakable character of this iconic vehicle, while still remaining loyal to the typical Bulli line. We consciously invoke, for example, the horizontal character line that runs around the body of a T3”, Kirzinger said.
“The DNA of the T’s multifaceted story lives on. In a completely new Multivan, which is nevertheless a typical Bulli at first sight. With a characterful, endearing look and clear, timeless design.”
Further details will be made available when the new Volkswagen T7 makes its global debut in mid-June.
