Throughout their history in South Africa, BMW has presented homologated versions of revered models and special editions to line the ranks for local buyers. To commemorate the 50 years of Plant Rosslyn, we may receive something special yet again.
First thing first, the days of homologated specials are behind us. The current motorsport climate no longer requires that race-prepared models be produced in limited numbers and sold to the public, although there are exceptions. The 70s and the 80s were the heydays for that and automakers like BMW, Alfa Romeo and Ford to name a few left their mark on the history of South Africa’s motoring world.

In recent years, few seem to have risen to local popularity more than the BMW 333i, which was produced in limited numbers just outside of Pretoria. Only 210 rolled off of those production lines, enough volume to satisfy Group 1 racing regulations. A reason for their growing popularity and skyrocketing value is that hey were often perceived as a better E30 M3 than the actual E30 M3, which only packed a four-banger up front.
It did have two less sought-after siblings in the form of the 2,7 litre 325iS in ‘Evo 1′ and ‘Evo 2′ guise however production numbers of those were far more significant which is why they are less valuable. Regardless, that set the tone for Special Edition BMW models throughout the years and now, there may be another to join the ranks.

When asked whether South Africa could expect to receive a commemorative model, BMW Group SA CEO Peter van Binsbergen answered with “We have some ideas.” While this will whet the pallet of many BMW aficionados and South African motoring enthusiasts as a whole, he did caution that the days of homologation specials are behind us and that “dreams will remain dreams.”
In recent years, local BMW buyers have been offered Mzansi edition derivatives of the 1 Series, 2 Series and 3 Series models. Similarly, the locally manufactured BMW X3 also received similar upgrades with its own Mzansi Edition in 2021, before it underwent its life cycle update.

While the dozens of models at the disposal of the BMW lineup could be imparted with some special treatment and imported into South Africa, the most realistic and logical option could be for another bespoke X3. This realistically is the most likely avenue for a South African exclusive model and if it ever does arrive, we can only expect that it will include the BMW 50 Year an Icon emblem which has been inspired by a work of art crafted by Dr Esther Mahlangu. While this all remains as speculation, a special edition model to commemorate the momentous milestone would presumably be unveiled throughout the year so stay tuned!
