With white bakkies ubiquitous in Saudi Arabia, here is a throwback to a brave driver of one who managed to outrun the torrents of a flash flood.

Many parts of Saudi Arabia were hit by flash flooding on the 2nd of March in 2018, including Houta Bani Tamim. Aerial footage recorded by Abdullah Ghumayjan shows the flood waters as they poured into King Abdullah Road in Houta Bani Tamim located 150 km South of the Arab country’s Riyadh capital.

With the torrents smashing into several SUVs and bakkies making the crossing along the shallow bed, a solitary vehicle is seen traversing a stretch of road while being flanked between flowing waters in almost every direction. The bakkie, believed to be a single cab, Saudi spec Hilux is then seen coming to a halt where the tracks lead into the now flooded crossing.

In a matter of seconds, with very few routes to choose from, the driver begins proceeding in the direction where the water is yet to fill and manages a narrow escape from the flash flood, even dipping into the leading water for several seconds before making it to safety.
