Set to benefit from a 10-year investment plan alongside its sister brands within the newly formed Stellantis group, Alfa Romeo is looking forward to a brighter future that looks likely to bring a significantly expanded range of products, both at the lower and higher ends of the market.
Although Alfa Romeo has abandoned the hatchback market, with the recent discontinuation of the Giulietta and the earlier axing of the Mito, the company could eventually launch a spiritual successor to the latter. According to Autocar, which cited Alfa Romeo boss Jean-Philippe Imparato, the Italian carmaker is seriously considering a new five-door hatchback entry model that would attract younger buyers. The UK publication further states that this new hatch would be built around the Stellantis Group’s ‘STLA Small’ platform for compact cars. This architecture originates from Peugeot and currently underpins the Peugeot 208 and Opel Corsa, however an Alfa Romeo version would certainly have its own distinctive chassis tuning and styling.
This platform will also reportedly underpin a new compact SUV (currently codenamed Brennero), which will slot beneath the upcoming Tonale crossover that’s due in 2022. However, it would appear that Alfa Romeo is not planning to enter the SUV game at the expense of its sportier models. According to the aforementioned Autocar article, Alfa Romeo is also very keen to revive the GTV, although in this case it might take the form of a four-door coupe built on a Stellantis platform and offering an electric option, although a retro-inspired two-door coupe is also said to be under consideration.
Last month Imparato told CarSales that he was “very interested” in the GTV. “There is no statement or announcement at this stage, but I’m just giving you a personal feeling that I’m very interested in the GTV,” the Alfa Romeo boss said. He is also interested in reviving the Spider if the company’s financial position makes it possible to focus on niche vehicles further down the line.
