Of course, even in its standard form, the Mercedes-AMG G63 is an extreme and nonsensical vehicle, which is loved by many for those exact reasons, but if you’re venturing down this path then why not just make it even more extreme and nonsensical? That’s exactly what Brabus set out to do with its new 900 Rocket Edition.
Not only does the heavily modified Geländewagen boast an aggro looking widebody kit and extensively refurbished four-seater cabin but the German tuner has also managed to extract a whopping 622 kW and 1 250 N.m from the range-topping G-Class. And sure, that is not an improvement over the earlier 900 models but consider that this output was previously achieved with Mercedes-AMG’s V12 engine, whereas this new 900 Rocket Edition achieves it with the 4-litre twin-turbo V8 unit.
To that end, Brabus did more than just strap on a fancier turbocharger and tweak the engine software to the max – the tuner actually increased the engine displacement to 4407 cc, through enlarging the cylinder bores to 84 mm and installing correspondingly dimensioned pistons. Bespoke Brabus turbochargers, which boost to 1,4 bar, and a Ram-Air intake are also among the numerous modifications made to this powerplant.
But what difference does it all make out on the mean streets? According to Brabus, the 900 Rocket Edition can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 3,7 seconds and reach a top speed of 280 km/h.
To ensure the correct pose while doing the latter, this extra-special G-Class gets a Carbon Widestar Widebody exterior package, featuring numerous aerodynamic components and including a large rear spoiler. Filling out the wheel arches is a set of 24-inch Monoblock Z ‘Platinum Edition’ wheels, black in colour and with red pinstriping.
The Brabus interior decorators have done a comprehensive job inside, as they always do, and here we see an infusion of red trim elements (206 in total) as well as individual rear seats with special crest-shaped stitching. These back ‘thrones’ boast multi-contour adjustment as well as integrated seat ventilation and heating. Further decoration is provided by high-gloss sealed carbon panels in the cockpit and aluminium pedals and door locking pins.
