Alfa Romeo has appointed Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos as its new design head. This comes as the Italian automaker is preparing for a significant product expansion following a 10-year investment plan announced by new parent company Stellantis earlier this year.
Mesonero-Romanos has some stylish cars in his portfolio, having previously led the design of the Cupra Formentor and Tavascan models as well as the Seat Leon, Ibiza and Arona.
“Alejandro’s arrival represents a great opportunity for Alfa Romeo. Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos is a car enthusiast and did a wonderful job at Cupra. The Design Team and I look forward to working with him,” Stellantis design chief Jean-Pierre Ploué said.
Alfa Romeo CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato said he was “happy to address the upcoming challenges at Alfa Romeo with a forward-thinker like Alejandro Mesonero-Romanos”.
As mentioned, Alfa Romeo is set to expand its portfolio of products in the coming years, and although the Italian carmaker has yet to officially announce anything other than the Tonale SUV, it is strongly rumoured that Alfa Romeo is planning to introduce an even smaller SUV and is also considering a compact hatchback to succeed the Mito, Autocar reported recently. New brand boss Imparto is also keen on reviving the GTV nameplate and word on the street is that Alfa Romeo is considering a four-door coupe model built on an ‘electrified’ Stellantis platform. The Alfa Romeo Spider has also been mentioned as a possible candidate for reincarnation, although this would likely depend on the brand’s more mainstream models making some money for the brand first.
