Isuzu Motors Thailand has whipped the wraps off the updated 2027 D-Max, revealing the new 2.2-litre Bi-Turbo engine for top trim levels. Here’s what we know…

In April 2026, Isuzu confirmed that the updated D-Max model would arrive soon in South Africa. By late October 2026, the automaker introduced exclusive updates to the top-tier D-Max and MU-X trims. A new bi-turbo diesel engine represents the most significant addition to the line-up.
Making its debut in Thailand, the new Isuzu D-Max Bi-Turbo features a 2.2-litre twin-turbodiesel engine. Buyers can choose between a six-speed manual or an eight-speed automatic transmission. This engine builds on the single-turbo Ddi Maxforce unit introduced in September 2025. It uses a two-stage turbocharger configuration to deliver 150 kW at 3 600 r/min and 500 N.m of torque between 1 600 and 2 600 r/min. Consequently, the Isuzu D-Max Bi-Turbo offers the highest power output of any D-Max or MU-X variant worldwide. The unit also features a high-pressure 10-hole injector system rated at 36 259.4 PSI.
The current South African D-Max and MU-X ranges feature 1.9-litre and 3.0-litre diesel engines. The 3.0-litre version generates 140 kW at 3 600 r/min and 450 N.m from 1 600 r/min. Meanwhile, South Africa has not yet received the single-turbo 2.2-litre engine used in entry-level overseas models. In markets like Australia, that entry-level unit produces 120 kW and 400 N.m of torque.
Local availability/introduction of the 2.2-litre Bi-Turbo
Locally, the new Bi-Turbo variants of the updated Isuzu D-Max and MU-X has yet to be confirmed for our market. However, the new engine is set to make its way into Thai dealerships in October 2026.
