It’s official! Honda will develop a Triton-based bakkie through a partnership with Mitsubishi. Here’s what we know…

On 12 October 2026, we reported that Honda may launch a bakkie based on the Mitsubishi Triton. Well, the two Japanese automakers have now confirmed that a Triton-based Honda bakkie is, indeed, in the works, with Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and Mitsubishi Motors Corporation having signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the development of the Honda-badged body-on-frame pickup. This won’t be the first Honda-badged bakkie, however. Indeed, the Minato manufacturer already produces and sells a bakkie – in the form of the Ridgeline, which features a unibody construction – in the US. Significantly, the partnership between Honda and Mitsubishi marks the first initiative between the two companies for complementary supply to each other’s product portfolios. In this case, the collaboration enables Honda to expedite the process of introducing a bakkie to its lineup, while Mitsubishi benefits via an increase in production volume and enhanced capacity utilisation at its manufacturing plant in Thailand.
Based on the Triton, the Honda will likely feature the same engine options. As a reminder, the Triton – on which the new Nissan Navara is also based – is available with the choice of two 2.4-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine options: single- and twin-turbo. The former is available in two states of tune: 81 kW/200 N.m and 135 kW/430 N.m. The single-turbo unit can be had with either a six-speed automatic transmission or five-speed manual gearbox. Drivetrains include 4×2 and 4×4. The Triton Bi-Turbo produces a healthier 150 kW and 470 N.m of torque – the latter available from a low 1 500 r/min. Power is delivered to the road via Mitsubishi’s Super Select II four-wheel drivetrain, paired with a six-speed self-shifter.
