The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan has made its debut. We take a closer look at the Tiguan-badged EV’s powertrains, electric range, dimensions, and features.
Billed as one of Volkswagen’s most important electric models for the years ahead, the ID. Tiguan replaces the ID.4 and ID.5 in the German marque’s ID. portfolio. The ID. Tiguan joins the ID. Polo and ID. Cross as the latest battery-electric VW product to don a familiar moniker. The ID. Tiguan will be sold alongside the internal combustion engine (ICE), eTSI (mild hybrid), and eHybrid (plug-in hybrid) models when it launches in the beginning of 2027.
Powertrains, performance and electric range
Based on VW’s MEB+ platform, the ID. Tiguan is available with the choice of three powertrain options. Kicking off the lineup, the entry-level powertrain comprises a single electric motor producing 140 kW and 350 N.m of torque — good for a claimed 0-100 km/h sprint time of 8.5 seconds and 160 km/h top speed. The rear-mounted unit is coupled with a 58 kWh lithium-iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which serves up a claimed operating range of 450 km on a single, full charge. This model has a claimed combined energy consumption of 16.3-14.9 kWh/100 km. The more cost-effective battery can receive up to 105 kW at a DC fast charger. Plugged into such a facility, a 10-80% charge takes 26 minutes, VW says. All models offer AC charging of up to 11 kW.
The remaining two powertrains are both paired with a 77 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack supporting DC fast charging of up to 165 kW. At the maximum charging rate, the NMC item charges from 10-80% in a claimed 29 minutes. The 77 kWh models can be had with either a rear- or all-wheel drivetrain. The rear-wheel-drive model’s single electric motor produces 210 kW and 545 N.m, while the 4Motion derivative’s dual electric-motor setup produces a combined power output of 220 kW. VW claims 0-100 km/h sprint times of 6.6 and 6.3 seconds for the RWD and all-paw variants, respectively. In terms of operating range, the RWD offers “up to” 600 km, with a claimed energy consumption of 16.2-14.6 kWh/100 km. The 4Motion variant has a combined energy consumption of 17.2-15.7 kWh/100 km and a 560 km operating range.
Exterior dimensions
The ID. Tiguan measures 4 618 mm in length and 1 855 mm in width. For reference, this makes it 79 mm longer and 12 mm wider than the ICE Tiguan. The EV stands 1 619 mm tall (down 12 mm from the ICE Tiguan), with a 2 765 mm wheelbase (up 89 mm over the ICE model). The EV’s front and rear overhangs are 872 and 981 mm, respectively.

Interior space and boot capacity
In terms of interior space, VW claims the ID. Tiguan offers 1 066 mm front headroom, with rear occupants afforded 979 mm of headroom. The EV’s boot capacity is rated at 534 litres, with an additional 32 litres of packing space available in the nose-located front luggage compartment.
Features, technology and equipment
The cabin plays host to such items as 10-inch digital instrumentation and 15-inch touchscreen infotainment. The latter item is supplemented by a 12-inch front passenger display. A neat addition, the instrumentation features a selection of retro-inspired graphics. Indeed, the driver can choose between six instrumentation layouts reminiscent of the setups found in previous VWs. The latter includes the Golf Mk1, Golf Mk2 Country, Golf Mk4, original Tiguan, Race Touareg, and the Beetle. Physical buttons are also present. Optional items include heated and ventilated front seats, a 480 W Harman Kardon sound system, and a panoramic sunroof.
Price and availability
Scheduled to launch at the beginning of 2027, the ID. Tiguan will be priced from €42 695, which, at the current Rand-Euro exchange rate, translates to R792 058.85. The Tiguan-badged EV has yet to be confirmed for South Africa. However, we don’t expect it to arrive in our market anytime soon.
