The lion roars! Striking new (third-gen) Peugeot 308 hatchback revealed

The new Peugeot 308 has been revealed, with the third-generation version of the hatchback offered in Europe with the option of plug-in hybrid engines.

Wearing the French firm’s recently revealed new logo, the latest version of the midsize hatch will hit showrooms in Europe later in 2021. At this stage, it’s not clear whether there are plans to offer the new 308 in South Africa.

Riding on the EMP2 platform, the newcomer’s wheelbase has grown some 55 mm, which Peugeot says results in extra room for the rear passengers. Meanwhile, the vehicle’s overall length is up 11 mm and its height has been cut by 20 mm, allowing for what Peugeot terms “an even sleeker silhouette and a more powerful stance”.

The boot has a claimed capacity of 412 litres, with a further 28 litres of storage available in a hidden compartment beneath the floor. With the rear seats folded flat, the loading capacity increases to a claimed 1 323 litres.

The slim LED headlamps dominate the design up front and are joined by vertically arranged LED daytime running lights. Round back, the taillamps also feature full LED technology as well as the brand’s signature three-claw lighting design.

Inside, you’ll find the latest version of Peugeot’s so-called i-Cockpit, which incorporates a configurable 10-inch digital instrument cluster (with a 3D display in high-spec models) and a small steering wheel (now with sensors to detect the driver’s grip levels when using driving aids).

There’s also a 10-inch centrally sited touchscreen, located slightly lower than the digital cluster. A permanent banner at the top of the screen displays outdoor temperature information, air conditioning controls, connectivity data, notifications and time.

So, what’s happening under the bonnet? Well, Peugeot says the new 308 will be available in Europe with the choice of two plug-in hybrid powertrains plus two “efficient” petrol and diesel engines.

The Hybrid 225 e-EAT8 option combines a 132 kW petrol engine and an 81 kW electric motor mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The Hybrid 180 e-EAT8, meanwhile, features a 110 kW petrol mill and the same 81 kW electric unit and eight-speed gearbox. Both versions use a 12,4 kWh lithium-ion battery.

For those not interested in a plug-in hybrid powertrain, Peugeot will also offer its 96 kW 1,2-litre petrol engine and 96 kW 1,5-litre BlueHDi turbodiesel. Both ship standard with an eight-speed auto cog-swapper and stop-start technology.
