Renders and concept art of the new Hilux have drawn from many existing and previous Toyota double cab and SUV models in other markets. Most notable is the Toyota Tacoma whose likeness has served as the basis for many renderings of a supposed ninth-generation Hilux model.
The Tacoma is one of the most popular Toyota badged models sold in the US market. The latest Tacoma model is founded on Toyota’s TNGA-F platform, which is a high-strength, steel ladder frame platform, whereas the current Hiluz utilises the TNGA platform. In the most high-strung configuration, the Tacoma features a 2,4-litre turbocharged petrol four-cylinder engine that produces a total output of 243 kW and more than 500 N.m! However, it’s unlikely that the next generation Hilux will utilise the same powerplant considering the prominence of diesel-powered models in our market.

The eighth generation of the Toyota Hilux has been available since 2015 and has yet to be superseded, but rumours and speculation point to the next Hilux iteration adopting a hybrid powertrain configuration. These claims aren’t too far-fetched as a mild-hybrid Hilux concept has already been used in the World Rally Championship in Kenya earlier this year.

“We are continually striving to reduce the fuel consumption of our vehicles to help reduce on-going costs for customers, as well as helping reduce our environmental impact, and the addition of 48-Volt Technology to our biggest-selling vehicle line will contribute to this,” — Sean Hanley, Toyota Australia’s Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and Franchise Operation.
