When Volkswagen revealed its Golf-sized ID.3 electric hatch back in 2019 it was touted as the most significant VW since the Beetle. Nobody knows exactly when the new-age offering will make the Golf obsolete, but given the aggressive push towards electrification it will probably happen at some point in the future.
But what will today’s GTI and R drivers get as a substitute for their favourite performance hatch? Volkswagen’s CEO Ralf Brandstätter has given us an idea of how a future electric hot hatch could look by posting a teaser pic of the upcoming ID.X concept on his Linkedin page.
To create this future hot hatch, the engineering team raided the parts bin of the recently revealed ID.4 GTX performance SUV, but gave it even more power. Featuring a twin-motor all-wheel drive system, the ID.X concept boasts a system output of 245 kW and according to Brandstätter, it’s capable of sprinting from 0-100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds. That’s not quite in the same league as the new Golf R, which does its dash in a claimed 4.7 seconds, but it is a full second quicker than the new GTI.
Oh, and Brandstätter mentioned that there’s a drift mode too.
The most powerful ID.3 hatchback to date is a single-motor variant that produces 150 kW. There is no word on whether a hot version will arrive during its first generation, although the presence of the new concept does at least show that Volkswagen is thinking about it.
Brandstätter reiterated that the ID.X Concept was not destined for production but he did state that the company would “take up many ideas” from it.
“A big compliment to the team of Andreas Reckewerth and all the colleagues involved – you can see: Cars are built here by people who love cars!” the CEO enthused.
