South Africa’s 10 best-selling bakkies of August 2019

By: CAR magazine

The sales figures for August 2019 are in … and the big news from our list of South Africa’s best-selling bakkies is that the Ford Ranger has dropped out of the top two.

According to Naamsa, August 2019’s new vehicle industry sales came in at 45 537 units, representing a decline of 5,1 percent, year on year. The light commercial segment (14 041 units), meanwhile, showed a small gain of 0,5 percent compared with the corresponding month in 2018 (also, check out the 10 best-selling passenger vehicles and the 13 worst-selling passenger cars). So, what exactly happened in terms of bakkie sales in the eighth month of 2019?

Well, the Toyota Hilux remained at the very top of the table, with the Nissan NP200 climbing a spot to take second place. A mere six units separated the half-tonne bakkie from the Ranger, which dropped to third. For the record, after the first eight months of the year, the Hilux finds itself a full 10 182 units ahead of its Blue Oval rival.

Meanwhile, the Isuzu D-Max – having late in 2018 switched from the KB badge – held steady in fourth (its final figure comprised 1 133 units of the D-Max and 10 units of the KB). The Nissan NP300/Hardbody remained in fifth on a pleasingly round figure of 800 units.

The Mahindra Pik-Up stayed steady in sixth, with the Toyota Land Cruiser Pick-up again in seventh. Volkswagen Amarok sales slacked a little although not enough to force the German bakkie from eighth, with the GWM Steed likewise holding onto ninth. The Nissan Navara again grabbed the final spot on the list.

That means there was no room for the Mahindra Bolero (45), Mitsubishi Triton (26), Mazda BT-50 (22) or Fiat Fullback (10) in August 2019. Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz South Africa doesn’t report individual model sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how many X-Class units were sold during the month.

See the top ten list below, and have a look at July 2019’s figures here.
