Available in Sedan and Avant body styles, the new Audi RS 5 has arrived in South Africa. We detail the German marque’s first-ever plug-in hybrid performance car. See pricing below…

Audi RS 5 powertrain and performance
Audi’s first-ever plug-in hybrid (PHEV) performance car, the new RS 5’s PHEV powertrain pairs a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine with a single electric motor for combined power and torque outputs of 470 kW and 825 N.m. Power is delivered to the road via the German marque’s quattro all-wheel-drive system, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. A limited-slip centre diff distributes torque between the front and rear axles in either a 70:30 or 15:85 split depending on the driving situation.
The new-energy RS 5 completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in a claimed 3.6 seconds on to an electronically limited 250 km/h top speed. However, specifying the Audi Sport package lifts the latter to 285 km/h. The RS 5 can travel at up to 140 km/h on electric power alone.
Stopping power is provided by 420 mm front/400 mm rear RS steel brakes. However, customers have the option of specifying an RS carbon-ceramic setup with 440 mm front/410 mm rear discs.
Audi RS 5 fuel consumption and electric range
The RS 5’s electric motor is fed by a 25.9 kWh (gross; 22 kWh, net) lithium-ion battery pack, which serves up a claimed electric-only operating range of 75-84 km in the Sedan and 75-83 km in the Avant. Audi claims combined fuel consumption figures of 3.8-4.3 L/100 km for the Sedan and 3.9-4.5 L/100 km for the Avant. However, when the battery is discharged, the former and latter figures increase to 9.5-10 and 9.6-10.2 L/100 km, respectively. Both models feature a 48-litre fuel tank.
Audi RS 5 weight, dimensions and boot capacity
The RS 5 Sedan and Avant tip the scales at 2 355 and 2 370 kg (unladen), respectively. The Sedan and Avant measure 4 896 mm in length and 1 952 mm in width. The Sedan and Avant stand 1 428 and 1 446 mm tall, respectively, with a 2 607 mm wheelbase. Audi claims a boot capacity of 331 litres for the Sedan and 361 litres for the Avant — the former and latter increasing to 1 170 and 1 302 litres when folding down the rear seat backrests, respectively.

Audi RS 5 standard equipment and features
Standard equipment includes darkened matrix LED headlamps, replete with dynamic light sequencing and turn signals, RS-specific LED daytime-running lights, and LED rear lights pro. Gloss black ‘RS’ detailing and black wing mirror housings are also present. The RS 5 is fitted with 20-inch Audi Sport alloy wheels as standard, with a selection of 21-inch items available at additional cost. An RS sport exhaust system is included.
The interior plays host to Audi’s now-familiar new virtual cockpit plus and MMI dual-screen arrangement. The digital instrumentation is supplemented by a standard-fitment head-up display. Music is relayed through the cabin via a Bang & Olufsen 3D Premium sound system. A panoramic glass roof is available as a no-cost option.
