- Toyota Hilux GR Sport – R999 000

Earlier this year, Toyota announced that it intends to introduce the latest, and seemingly most hardcore, iteration of the GR-badged Hilux model sometime this month. The GR Sport is distinguished from its predecessor by a much wider stance, a widebody kit consisting of black plastic fender flares, and all-terrain footwear.
Additionally, the new Hilux GR-S benefits from a handful of enhancements to its hardware, such as added KYB Monotone dampers and ventilated brake discs accompanied by four-piston callipers at the rear, while the existing ventilated front brakes grow in size compared to the outgoing model. Compared to the outgoing GR Sport model, the 2 020 mm long Hilux GR Sport features wider front and rear tracks, 135 mm and 155 respectively. Ground clearance has increased by 15 mm, availing its cosmetic bash plate.

The exterior of the brawny GR-badged double cab is adorned with several design elements, such as the G-mesh front grille, red brake callipers, multi-spoke alloy wheels and aero ducts feeding into the enlarged wheel arches. The interior echoes the exterior’s design with elements like the red seatbelts, GR branded partial leather seats with accent stitching, and aluminium pedals are focal points of the cabin that further distinguish it from its stablemates.

At the core of the GR-S model is the familiar 2.8-litre turbo diesel powerplant employed throughout the local Hilux range. The diesel four-cylinder outputs 165 kW/ 550 N.m in this configuration and is affixed to a six-speed automatic transmission. Power is fed to the rear except when the all-wheel-dring mode is active. The new Hilux GR Sport benefits from a low-range mode, a lockable rear differential and hill descent control, which are standard for this model.
